Articles1 > * Reiki for Animals

* Traditionally, Reiki practice and teaching have centered on healing humans. However, there are many reasons why we have chosen to focus the practice of Reiki on the animal kingdom. We believe animals to be sentient, spiritual beings who give generosity of themselves to the planet and are innately deserving of the benefits of Reiki.

Living with people and civilization exacts a great toll on animals. They are often deprived of their natural habitats, freedom and ability to manifest their full natures, sexuality and reproductive function, yet they continue to show us devotion, loyalty and an amazing capacity for forgiveness. They are often misunderstood, and the enormous gifts they offer mankind are not recognized or honored. They cannot speak their needs and wants in human terms and are often dependent upon people for the satisfaction of even their most basic needs.

Animals teach us many things. They teach us to listen, to live in the moment, to forgive and to be joyful. Animals teach us about commitment and acceptance. They are our confidantes and comforters. They also have a way of bringing up our own issues so that we must deal with them and, in the process, grow. For many of us, our most profound experiences of unconditional love have been with animals. And many offer us extraordinary gifts as working animals: guide dogs, therapy horses, search-and-rescue and other service animals. Because of domestic animals' close contact and bond with humans, they often internalize and reflect their people's problems. This sympathetic connection can manifest as a problem for the animal on the physical, emotional or spiritual level.

* How Reiki can help animals heal
Reiki can help animals in myriad ways. Practicing Reiki with your animal companion deepens your bond as well as the level of understanding and trust between you. With healthy animals, Reiki can help maintain health on all levels. Reiki can heal physical illness and injury in animals as well as problems on emotional and spiritual levels. It is a powerful tool for emotional healing following trauma, abuse, neglect, fear and trust issues, reaching deeply into even the most damaged spirits.

For high-strung or nervous animals, Reiki induces deep relaxation and stress-reduction and, over time, can reduce the tendency toward nervousness. Reiki can accelerate healing after injury or illness. It complements both conventional and alternative therapies and can enhance their actions and lessen their side effects. Finally, for a dying animal and his people, Reiki provides compassionate support that can make the transition more peaceful for all concerned.

* Why Reiki is ideal for healing animals
Although Reiki traditionally has been used primarily for humans, it has many qualities that make it an ideal complementary therapy for animals. First and foremost, it is gentle, painless, non-invasive and stress-free for animals. Reiki heals at all levels of an animal's being: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It is one of only a few therapies that brings no harm to any living thing - plant or animal - to produce its healing properties. It goes to those issues most in need of healing, even those unknown to the practitioner.

Reiki is always safe and comfortable for both animal and healer. It can be given at a distance and adapted to any problem that affects animals, so it can be used under any circumstances. There is virtually no problem or circumstance that cannot be trreated effectively with Reiki.

Although it is powerful and always goes to the source of health problems, Reiki can do no harm to the recipient or the practitioner. It is a simple method that can heal complex problems. There is a deep sense of gratitude on both sides after a treatment.
